IB Art: Comparative Study

During the International Baccalaureate Visual Arts program, a required component is the Comparative Study: an analysis of works by two or more artists. For my Comparative Study, I investigated the similarities and differences of Vincent van Gogh, a post-impressionist painter of the 19th century, and Leonid Afremov, a modern impressionist contemporary painter of the 20th and 21st centuries. The works studied in this visual essay are Winter Park 3, 2008 by Leonid Afremov, Bewitched Park 2, 2015 by Leonid Afremov, and Starry Night Over the Rhône, 1888 by Vincent van Gogh. The Comparative Study looks not only into the formal qualities of the pieces in question, but also into the lives of the artists, which are more similar than it may seem.
